‘Angel Lost’ is today’s free eBook download

angel lost

Today’s free eBook is Angel Lost. Written by F.M. Meredith, the book is a series of subplots that paints a complicated series of events from a sex offender to a serial kidnapper – all come together as an auspicious mirage of an angel appears in a town window.

Angel Lost is the seventh in F. M. Meredith’s Rocky Bluff Police Department series…it delivers everything we have come to expect in these books – characters that feel like neighbors and a handful and a half of subplots all neatly woven together.

Detective Doug Milligan is set to marry Officer Stacey Wilbur. As their wedding day approaches, he is unhappy…about her assignment to jog the beach in hopes of catching a pervert who has been exposing himself to women.

Abel Navarro’s mother is showing signs of Alzheimer’s, the new transfer from LAPD has a problem that won’t be solved merely by transferring to a small town, and a reflection on a plate glass window downtown is seen by some as a sign from God because it appears to be an angel.

Just as these things seem to be coming to a head, a serial kidnapper — and perhaps murderer — who has been working his way south from Oregon, shows up…These books are a sort of cross between The Waltons and Hill Street Blues, and I hope there are many more to come.

Angel Lost is available as a free download on Amazon from 06/23/2014 – 06/24/2014. As of this writing, the book has an average of 4.7 out of 5 stars from 10 customer reviews. ‘Building Smarter Habits’ is today’s free eBook download

building smarter habits

Today’s free eBook is Building Smarter Habits: The Daily Habits of Insanely Productive People That Stick, a self-help book from writer Thomas Oppong. In the guide, you’ll find his “tips, guidance not as a commandment but as things you might try on your journey of change and constant learning.” He advises that you should “try them one or two at a time, so you might not be overwhelmed. ”

Here are some sample mini productivity hacks you can try each day:

1. Daily goals. Without a clear focus, it’s too easy to succumb to distractions. Set targets for each day in advance. Decide what you’ll do; then do it.

2. Worst first. To defeat procrastination learn to tackle your most unpleasant task first thing in the morning instead of delaying it until later in the day. This small victory will set the tone for a very productive day.

3. Peak times. Identify your peak cycles of productivity, and schedule your most important tasks for those times. Work on minor tasks during your non-peak times.

4. Mini-milestones. When you begin a task, identify the target you must reach before you can stop working. For example, when working on a book, you could decide not to get up until you’ve written at least 1000 words. Hit your target no matter what.

5. Slice and dice. Break complex projects into smaller, well-defined tasks. Focus on completing just one of those tasks.

6. 30 days. Identify a new habit you’d like to form, and commit to sticking with it for just 30 days. A temporary commitment is much easier to keep than a permanent one. You will be amazed at the results.

7. Do it now! (That should be your mantra) Recite this phrase over and over until you’re so sick of it that you cave in and get to work.

8. Single-task. Stop multi-tasking (seriously, stop) at least not on a day-to-day basis. Instead, focus on one task at a time. This leads to greater productivity and less stress.

Building Smarter Habits: The Daily Habits of Insanely Productive People That Stick, is available as a free download from Amazon on Tuesday 5/13/14 and Wednesday 5/14/14.  As of this writing, the book has an average of 4.5 out of 5 stars from 4 customer reviews. For more free eBooks, check out our 10 Websites to Download Free eBooks list, as well as our Free eBook of the Day archive, previously, on Appnewser.

Kobo relaunches Windows 8 eBook app, Windows Phone 8 to follow

Published by at 10:14 UTC, March 6th 2014

Kobo Inc. today relaunched the Windows 8 version of its eBook reading app and also plans to release a Windows Phone version of the app later this spring. The apps are described as enabling readers to “access all the features they love on their Kobo device right on their Windows notebook, tablet or desktop”.

Kobo provide a full service eBook experience, similar to the part Microsoft owned nook and Amazon’s Kindle, with the ability to browse, buy, and download eBooks and other digital content. Depending on the country in which you use the app there is access to up to 4 million titles in the Kobo eBookstore, from best-sellers to classic and comics.

Key reading features include the ability to sync bookmark pages and reading position to the cloud (multi-device support), a “night mode” that enables a softer background light, and the ability to customise the look and size of text. The Windows app include an exclusive feature, the ability to pin content to the Start screen for easy access.

Kobo

From the Kobo press release:

This spring Kobo will introduce the Kobo eReading app for Windows Phone to its line-up of top ranked applications. The Windows Phone experience will operate with the same functions as the Windows App for notebooks, tablets and desktops, offering the best content and experience to its readers.

The Windows 8 app is available for download now from the Windows Store. The Windows Phone 8 version of the app is expected to follow some time in the next month or so. For Windows Phone users this will provide an alternative to Amazon’s Kindle app and for existing Kobo device owners it will extend their reading experience to their Windows Phone device.

It’s notable that nook, a Kobo competitor, has yet to release a Windows Phone app. That’s despite a $ 300 million investment by Microsoft as part of strategic partnership with nook’s parent company Barnes & Noble.
